History Of Cairns

This fascinating city has been around since the late-1800s and there are plenty of stories to tell about its past. Captain James Cook, a British explorer and navigator, is famous for discovering and mapping Australia’s east coast, including the area that is now Cairns in Far North Queensland. Cook sailed along the coast in 1770 and named several landmarks, including Trinity Bay (which is now the location of Cairns). He also made several observations about the indigenous people and the natural environment in the region, which aided in the eventual European settlement – eventually leading to Cairns being established as a port for exporting sugar cane from Far North Queensland by 1888. That same year marked the start of construction on what would become one of Australia’s largest railway stations – The Great Northern Railway – which connected Cairns with points further south like Townsville & Brisbane.

Fast forward several decades, and during World War II Cairns became an important military base due to its close proximity to Singapore & Japan. Afterward, it continued growing rapidly in population size thanks largely to immigration from Europe & Asia. Eventually, those new settlers helped establish many iconic landmarks throughout town; including the picturesque Esplanade Boardwalk along the coastline – which is still enjoyed by visitors today!

So there you have it folks: A brief look at how this amazing region went from a quiet outpost in rural Queensland over 200 years ago to one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations.
